I went through NLS in February of 2014, my senior year of high school as chief of Jaccos Towne Lodge. In the two years since then, I have used the skills I learned at NLS many times, both in and out of Scouting. When I was an area director at Ransburg Scout Reservation, I had to asses the skills of my staff and use situational leadership to make sure they each had the support they needed to succeed at their jobs. Without my experience at NLS, I wouldn’t have known to assess each member of my staff and provide custom support for them. Outside of Scouting, I’ve used my NLS skills as the leader of group projects, mostly notably the final project in my public speaking class. Having been chosen as the leader of my group, it was up to me to select the topic for our presentation and make sure everyone knew what their specific part of the presentation was. Without having gone through NLS and having learned about LeaderThink, I would not have been nearly as effective at this role. My experience at the National Leadership Seminar prepared me, not only for my leadership roles in Scouting, but taught me how to interact with other people in a more meaningful fashion that gets results at the end of the day.
